Cultivation
Chives plants should be placed in full sun approximately 6 inches apart. It enjoys a pH between 6.0 and 7.0.
Starting from Seed
To start from seed, plant seeds 0.120 inches deep 12 weeks before the last frost. Transplant to larger containers if necessary. Harden off and move to the garden 6 weeks before the last frost.
To print a schedule of when to start seeds indoors, when to move outside, and when to direct sow, go to Browse and select the plants you are interested in. Then go to the Planting Schedule.
Seed Saving
Seed catalogs in the United States offer only generic chives (no varietal distinctions). Different varieties grown near one another would be insect cross-pollinated; common chives do not cross with garlic chives or any other alliums.
