Cultivation
Winter squash plants should be placed in full sun approximately 18 inches apart. It enjoys a pH between 5.5 and 6.5.
Starting from Seed
To start from seed, plant seeds 1.000 inches deep 3 weeks before the last frost. Transplant to larger containers if necessary. Harden off and move to the garden 4 weeks after the last frost.
To print a schedule of when to start seeds indoors, when to move outside, and when to direct sow, go to Browse and select the plants you are interested in. Then go to the Planting Schedule.
Seed Saving
Isolate plants by 660 feet for home use. For total purity isolate by 1 miles. Squash will only cross within the same species (pepo with pepo, mixta with mixta, moschata with moschata, and maxima with maxima). You can safely plant one variety of each species close to one another and still save seeds.
