Gardening Plans for April

Well here we are well and truly into April. I've done pretty fair keeping up with all my gardening tasks that I scribbled into my notebook back in the cold months of winter. My pages are in a three ring binder now, instead of the spiral notebook. That way I can insert and remove and rearrange to my heart's delight.

I've gotten the potatoes and peas planted. I'm not doing sweet potatoes this year; I just couldn't work in everything and they're something that got dropped. I planted my lettuce yesterday, about a week later than I'd hoped to, and I've realized I totally forgot to order spinach and cauliflower seeds!

If you look at the large image of the page, you can see that this week (8-14) I'm transplanting *and* direct sowing broccoli. The transplants will be for us to eat fresh. I'm going to be starting a few plants every 2-3 weeks during the growing season. The direct sowing is a huge planting, for freezing and/or dehydrating.

I'll be starting my winter squash (if I ordered any seeds... I can't remember) in peat cups or jiffy pellets next week. They hate being transplanted so a method that does not disturb the roots is preferred.

Not gloating of course, but...

bellpeppers are blossoming
tomatoes are blossoming
squash really wants to blossom, but technically, it's probably 2 or 3 days away.

lettuce being eaten by deer faster than I can...

baby carrots just now getting harvestable.

blueberry bushes are laden with green berries, not as much as last year's bumper crop.

ho hum...

Maurice,
Gosh, thanks! I try to emulate the blogs that I myself enjoy the most.

I took a look at your blog - you're new - welcome to the blogosphere. Some folks have been doing this for years. I've only been at it a few months.

It was hard to come up with ideas at first but it's a lot easier now. Partly because it's Spring and there's so much more going on, and partly because I now look at the events of the day with a "blog" filter - as in "Oooh! This would be great for my blog!"

Ouch! I'm crushed. Here, let me put down this collander of fresh picked green ice lettuce from the garden so I can wipe my eyes.

Since I live in Narnia (it's always winter), I enjoyed reading your gardening stuff. My hands are itching to get into the soil, but another storm is on the way. At least it will be easy to dig the ground once the rain stops.

I wish I could plant veggies on my property, but I just don't have enough sun...I live in the forest (have I mentioned it's always winter?) But, I have lots of woodland shade type plants, which I love.

I will enjoy your veggie growing vicariously. Boy that asparagas will be yummy.

Thanks for stopping by.

PS. I think FC needs a good thrashing...after we steal his veggies.

WE're just now THINKING about planting anything here, maybe next week. Amazing the difference, even in the mountains. But I'm thinking about that lettuce in Florida....
