Tired Baby
This little guy (or gal) is all tuckered out from the busy day yesterday. Getting put in a cardboard box, shipped overnight, getting picked up at the post office, travelling home in a car, learning to drink and eat... it was a big day! These little guys are so funny. They'll start nodding off and snuggle down on the floor like they're on a nest, and then their heads tilt forward until their beaks hit the floor. Then their heads just slowly sink sideways. They lie there until one of their buddies runs helter skelter right across their exhasted little body, and then they wake up all confused and try to figure out what's going on.
Last night when it got dark, there were little bugs flying around the light bulbs we have running to keep these guys warm (new chicks need ambient temps of 90 to 95F). Their cardboard box brooder is in the greenhouse, and little bugs have easy access. The chicks gobbled up those tiny flying things like nobody's business! They knew exactly what to do. They are lightning fast, efficient, and ruthless.
I'm liking them already. Good chickens!

Aren't they wonderful?? Is it no wonder coming down with Crashyitis feels so good?
A large carpenter ant (one of many who strolled into my house) crawled into the brooder with my two day olds. That sucker was toast. They even did what I call "The Bug Dance", which involves one chick running in circles, bug in beak, while the others give chase. In the process, the bug or what's left of it is passed from beak to beak until it gets eaten or lost.
It's amazing what they are born KNOWING.
Are you handling them a lot? It doesn't hurt them, and they respond to having the tops of their heads stroked with a fingertip by falling asleep on you. They like having their necks and crop area rubbed, too. Then, they are calm if you need to catch and examine them. I just do it b/c I want to love on them.
PS Your gardening posts are entertaining and appreciated. Great posts all around!
Ruthless describes chickens perfectly. Good thing we aren't 2 inches tall.
woohoo! congrats on the chickies! they sure are fun to watch aren't they? our first batch turn 14 weeks today and we sure are looking forward to those eggs.
i hope your garden wasn't hindered by the cold snap we had last week. it sure looks good in your pictures. you have gotten alot done this spring and you should be awfully proud.
peace... kurt
Kim, I definitely understand Crashyitis now. They know TONS of stuff. They eat bugs automatically, they preen, they do all kinds of "chicken" stuff their second day of life. Don't even need a mama bird to feed them like nesting birds do.
We look at them a lot and handle them some, but not tons.
FC - two inches tall? Perish the thought! Those chickens would be worse than anything in a Japanese thriller. You should blog about your chickens more. That way I won't have to listen to you go on and on about that garden of yours :)
Kurt, I didn't have any "hot weather" plants out when we had that cold snap, but now I have set out my tomatoes and peppers. My peas are struggling with the heat but I think we finally got a break from that. Good thing, too, because they've only just begun to flower. Maybe I planted them too late.
