The Buck Stops Here
We got a buck about a month ago, to keep our does company. Here he is, in all his red-eyed evilness. After a small initial skirmish, they've decided they like him, and he likes them. Yay!
He's a Californian (the three does are New Zealand Whites). He is white with dark ears and nose, and gray tail. His toes have a tiny bit of darkness to them. Some Californians have really dark ears, feet, and tails.
Californian bucks and NZW does are supposed to produce some good meat rabbits, with a good meat to bone ratio and a good feed to meat conversion. I have no idea what the kits will look like.
The does are old enough to get pregnant now, so it's just a matter of time until we see kits. I'm getting excited. Two of the does are getting serious about digging burrows. I'm hoping that means they're nesting. Time will tell.
These pics aren't the greatest, because Mr. Buck is shy and a wee bit skittish. That's kind of odd, because he was in a hutch before we got him (he's about 16 months old) so he was handled plenty. To get these pictures I had to lift up the scrap of particle board he was using as his top-secret hideout, snap the pic, and hope for the best.

Wow, he does look evil (for a bunny).
You might get a bunch of Rosemary's Baby rabbits.
...just dated myself.
Boy, that Floridacracker sure is old! My son as a bunny, some sort of Flop, that I'd love to donate to your menagerie, but for some reason he wants to keep the bunny.
Evil rabbits go great with Tabasco.
Here's to lots of naughty bunny action. Go forth and multiply, little critters, and fill our pots.
ummm..your buck has the same look in his eyes as one I used to have--notice I say "used to". After he bit me, he went elsewhere..and tasted good in stir fry I am told.
Rabbits do tend to bite and scratch. They're way more likely to scratch the crud out of you with their back legs. They live in their own feces and urine and use those same back claws to dig holes in it, so any scratch is a bad one.
They sure are tasty though.
FC - You didn't date yourself *too* badly. I've heard of Rosemary's Baby, but I haven't seen it because my Mommy told me it was scary and I was too little to see it. :P
Pablo, why on earth would you want to donate your son's bunny? You wouldn't want your son donating something of yours, would you? I thought not.
Ernest, your comment gave my husband and I a big laugh. He's doing his part to multiply. Should have kits in a couple of months (the does are just getting old enough to get preggers).
Cyndy, if this guy turns mean, he'll be headed to freezer camp pronto!
You're killing me ...
You are effin monsters. How could you eat these precious little bun buns. They're extrememly loving and smart and the you guys butcher them. Thats like eating your dogs and their pups.
They harm nothing....
Hi Anonymous, thanks for your comments. We can butcher the precious bun buns (and our chickens) because we enjoy rabbit, chicken, and eggs. However we *don't* like the miserable conditions in commercial production environments.
