Mystery Chicken

When we ordered chicks, we got 25 "straight run" Speckled Sussex chicks. Straight run means a random mixture of males and females. We also got a free "mystery chick".

He'll be going to freezer camp soon but I thought I'd take his picture first. He's a very pretty fellow, if a bit on the small size. I don't know what kind of chicken he is. Probably a male of an egg-laying breed. It wouldn't make sense for the hatchery to give away anything else.

For some reason Blogger is giving me absolute fits with uploading pics. The larger version of some of my recent pics is cut off at the bottom, but I went with it because most of the time I can't even get the pics to upload at all. I'm sure they'll have it ironed out soon. For what I pay (free) I can't complain.

It looks like a Salmon Favorolle Rooster to me. We ordered one because my daughter really wanted one. I am not very experienced, though.

I really enjoy your blog. :-)

Kristianna, I have no idea. We thought maybe a silver gray dorking, but they don't have bright yellow feet, which this guy definitely does. Thank you for the nice comment about my blog :)

Hi Leslie! Pretty rooster! Don't know what he is, though. I'm amazed at how many breeds there are. We love our two roos, Braveheart and Bully. Whoever thought they would have such distinct personalities? I'm surprised that they get along with each other without fighting but I guess that's not uncommon with broodmates. I don't think I could bear to part with either of them. By the way, our hens have started laying! Yippee! The eggs are delicious, too. Oh, and congratulations on the kits!

Freezer camp. I've never heard it put quite that way before.

Emily, our roos are all broodmates and they get along well too - and there are TEN of them right now.

Pablo, I wish it were original but alas I stole the phrase.

FC, is that a pun? A reference to KFC? I'm not quite getting it. Help!

Yes, you did get it. You know, eleven herbs and spices, Colonel Sanders and all that.

Dang! Did I date myself AGAIN?

Fc says that he "dates himself", but I thought he was married. Go figure.
