Rabbits in the Snow

So, what do rabbits do when it's snowing , besides pee orange pee and freak out their caregivers? I'd always read that cold doesn't bother rabbits (but heat does). Well our rabbits stayed outside in the snow and enjoyed it. One rabbit rolled around in it while it was fresh, making little snow angels. The one pictured above is meditating and thinking rabbity thoughts.

Here you can see them at one of their favorite hangouts. They've melted the snow there with their body heat. The rabbit on the right is grooming. They spend a lot of time grooming.

Here is one of the kits from the main burrow, about 3 or 4 weeks old. Two of them have come out of the burrow so far. Well, I've seen two at once. I could be seeing a hundred rabbits one at a time. This little guy has been all over the colony. He doesn't mind the snow a bit. This morning he was in the feeder hutch sitting in the J-feeder munching away beside the big rabbits. He's a little smaller than their heads.

Speaking of kits, I checked on the nest under the dog crate (the one on the ground rather than in a burrow) and it moved a little bit. So far, so good!

Beta carotene can increase the orange/red pigment in rabbits. Also, if the weather abruptly changed, it could stress their system....if they are on an antibiotic for anything this could also be the case....It may affect one or all, it depends on the rabbit. Good luck!

I really like the photos of all your rabbits just being rabbits!

Glad to read that all are doing so well in the warren!

Orange urine in rabbits is normal, I think. I see it here almost all the time, but I also feed carrots every day. I don't think this laid back bunch is stressed, although I am with trying to keep them fed and watered in this cold weather!

Tia, after experiencing the orange/red pigment, I've done a bit of googling and found that it's very normal. Who knew? I think "stress" just means change of any sort. Good stress or bad stress, they just pee orange at the drop of a hat.

Lee Ann, they are definitely scwewy. I bet they laughed at me while I ran around their pen in a state of great agitation.

Cyndy, thanks :) They are lots of fun to watch. If it were warmer I'd just stand out there but for now visits are pretty short.

Hey
I just jumped online because my rabbit peed orange on the floor and has a bit of orange in her fur around her groin (feel a bit weird saying the V word for a rabbit)
Is it normal? Im panicing a wee bit as we have just brought her home from the pet store like a day ago. Can someone email me at rachel.beattie@hotmail.com with some more info on why rabbits do this?

Rachel,

It totally freaked me out when my rabbit peed orange/red. I thought one
of them was injured, and I thought I was seeing blood! Naturally, I
blogged about it:

Apparently red/orange/brownish urine is not unusual with rabbits and it
is usually due to some kind of stressor, which can be surprisingly mild.
Most common is a change in diet or a sudden cold snap.

Because you just brought her home from the pet store a day ago, the
dietary change is almost certainly what's causing the orange pee. Just
give her a bit of time to adjust and she should do fine.

Our rabbits never had a chance to see snow. We have no snow here ;)
