This is our front door. It has an attractive umbrella and a couple of beguiling 2x4s adorning it.
We had a pair of flycatchers who, after extensive research and shopping, decided that our front door was THE prime piece of real estate they'd been looking for. Never mind that the molding offers about half an inch of "ledge" upon which to build their home. Never mind the huge dogs that bound playfully about on the front porch making all kinds of racket. Never mind the amount of foot traffic that would be going on beneath their young progeny (including lots of vibration from door openings and closings). THIS was the place. They HAD to have it.
This is the porch immediately in front of my front door. See all the nesting efforts we destroyed, trying to discourage the flycatchers? They didn't get the message, even after two days. So, we propped the umbrella up with a couple of 2x4s we had lying about. They fussed at us from the wood pile for an entire day. I think they've gone to re-examine the real estate market now. I hope they find a location that suits.Labels: house

Had a robin do this year after year on top of our outside door lamp. If you haven't experienced getting too close to a robin's nest please take note they will dive bomb you when you do. lol Spring is such a fun time!
Hi Eric,
I knew blue jays would dive-bomb people and animals "too near" its nest but didn't know the docile robin would, too!
Some barn swallows built a mud nest over the door to a nature center near Kansas City. Since it was a nature center, no one wanted to destroy the nest. So the door was locked, and all traffic into the building had to use the back door for the duration. I like that sentiment.

Pablo,
I like it, too! That's what we did last year when some flycatchers built their nest over our mud room door. We worried, though, when the babies fledged and were porch-bound for a couple of days. Our dogs were *way* too interested in the chicks. :(
The day before yesterday I discovered a wren or something has built a nest and laid eggs in my toolbelt nail pouch hanging in my workshop. Looks like I'll have to use something else to hold my nails until they're done with it.
.....Alan.
They doooo make a mess, don't they?
I think they are worth the clean up though, nature's natural fly traps....;-)
Sometimes wild birds can make some very strange choices for neting sites! Hopefully Mr. & Mrs. Flycatcher will find better accomodations!
Alan, we had a bird build a nest in one of the kids' helmets that they wear when riding the ATV. That was funny! Helmets were switched around and shared last year.
Cyndy, we love the flycatchers. They are amazing to watch.
Leslie, I sure hope so. Usually we leave the nesting sites alone. I don't think the babies would have survived if we'd let the nest building continue in this location.
We had some mourning doves build a nest in one of the holes of a cinder block this spring. (This was after the mice and rats were evicted, but before the goats or chickens had moved in. I'm thinking of referring to it as our "attached barn" instead of our "garage" for the time being...)
