Burrow Digging

It was raining the morning I took these pictures. Despite the warmer temperatures (high 40's, creeping to 60), there are still pockets of ice and snow on the ground. So I was surprised to see one of the does digging like a crazy thing under a feeder hutch. That's her and her new burrow in the photo above; she's being camera-shy. Even though it's just the beginnings of a new burrow, she's moved LOTS of dirt in the early hours. Last night there was no activity at all under the feeder hutch.

Maybe she wasn't shy. Maybe she just suddenly realized how HUNGRY she was after all that work. Look at those muddy little feet.

The weird thing about her digging is that she just kindled a week ago, in a burrow under the feeder hutch. That little hole to the right is where the new kits are. I'm not sure if she is digging a better entrance or what. I'll just keep on watching and learning. I really enjoy pondering the rabbits and their behaviors.

amazing! what a joy it must be to see them. Do they ever make tunnels out of the enclosure....ie. "escape" out of their run. Chickens are so good .....whatever they do they come back. Peacocks on the other hand - no loyalty : )

WF, it is awfully darn cool. It's so interesting just watching them and trying to figure out what they're doing and why they do what they do.

Yes, their tunnels have extended out beyond the fence and they've escaped. Really only once in the two or so years I've had them (though they've escaped lots of other ways, too!).

I stomped on the burrow and caved it in, which stopped the escapes for now.

I plan to make a couple more enclosures and when I make them the fencing will go down at least two feet. I *think* that's deep enough to prevent dig-outs.

Yes, chickens are SO much more reliable. I'll take your word on the fickle peacocks :)

I'll enjoy watching with you- as long as you keep posting about them! Love the photos! I can almost smell the earth!

I wonder if she will move the kits out of the first hole and into the second? Keep us posted.

I love your blog I've been lurking here for a while. I originally came here looking for rabbity goodness, which I found, but there are so many other great things to see!
