Postal
A couple of folks have asked about Postal . Wow, I guess she's about a year old now, if not a year and a couple of weeks. How time flies. She lives outside now, mostly hanging around the equipment shed to sleep and we feed here there. She became an outdoor cat after Meccie's kittens were born. She didn't adjust well, and peed on the beds and pooped under them. That frustrated us. When she peed on my husband while he slept, she became an outside cat.
The mouse population is down, but nowhere near under control. Meccie's kittens should help that. They need to get fixed before they move outside, though.Postal is REALLY affectionate and sweet. She's super skinny and I worry about her making it through the winter. She has food available to her all the time, but she just doesn't eat much. Sometimes she'll eat a bunch, usually she just picks. She's surprisingly dim, and may have suffered brain damage as a teeny kitten from not having proper nutrition during critical developmental periods. I think she literally forgets to eat. I have to show her where her food dish is fairly often. It's always in the same place, but I think she forgets.

Leslie, I have some neighbors in our historic district who have "porch cats"---they are all fixed, and they have a bunch of the plastic cat carriers on their side porch with little blankets, pillows, or whatever in them...and they each have an electric heating pad inside! The porch itself is on the southeast side of the house, so it is out of the wind...maybe that is something you can do for your sweeties? =)
Amanda, that's a good idea. We do have a pet-carrier out there (cat sized) with a fluffy towel folded up in the bottom of it. She won't go in it. We even closed her up in there for a day, to let it get familiar and to get her smell in it. She won't have anything to do with it. Right now she sleeps on the motorcycle seat. The motorcycle has a tarp over it, AND is in a shed, so she's fairly protected from the elements. She's just so danged skinny.
